100% POSITIVE FEEDBACK
This tray was gifted to Andrew Foster Higgins (1831-1916), of Johnson & Higgins (
One of the largest insurance brokerage firms in the world until its acquisition in 1997
) on November 1st, 1864, by "The Italian Minister of Marine," Alfonso Ferrero La Marmora (1804-1878), who was, at the time, also serving as the Prime Minister of Italy, a position he held from 1864-1866.
The tray likely served as a diplomatic gift resultant from a business deal (or talks of a deal) between the Italian Navy and Johnson & Higgins, which was highly regarded for its marine insurance at this time.
The tray originates from an especially tumultuous time in both American and Italian history. In 1864, the United States was experiencing the height of the American Civil War, while Italy was navigating difficult international tensions between Austria and the Kingdom of Prussia-- tensions which eventually culminated in the Austro-Prussian War in 1866. This exquisite and rare tray is representative of Italian-American interreliance even during times of political unease around the world.
Made by William Gale & Sons c. 1864, this large 16" tray is ornately decorated with a Greek Key Meander alongside a beaded edge interior. Despite its age, the monogramming in the center of this tray is still vibrant and fully readable, and the tray's smooth surface is relatively free of deep scratches. Sitting atop four ball feet, the tray still sits perfectly flat and does not wobble when placed upon a table.
