    Description

BEAUTIFUL STERLING SILVER 4 CLAW FOOTED
    PRESENTATION SERVING TRAY
BEARING THE COAT OF ARMS OF
    AMERICAN
    GENERAL
    GEORGE
    WASHINGTON
    PRESENTED TO
    BRITISH
    LAND REGISTRY DIRECTOR OF SURVEYS
    COLONEL F.P.
    WASHINGTON
    UPON HIS RETIREMENT IN 1908
    \
THE USAGE OF THE  COAT OF ARMS OF THE FAMILY WASHINGTON
DATES BACK TO 12th CENTURY ENGLAND.
THE ARMS EMBLAZONED UPON THIS MAGNIFICENT TRAY ARE THOSE USED BY GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON, FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AS IS CONFIRMED BY INCLUSION OF HIS OWN MOTTO, "EXITAS ACTA PROBAT", "THE END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS". THE FLORAL CARTOUCHE SURROUNDING THE ARMS ARE VERY SIMILAR TO THE ARMORIAL BORDER FROM GEORGE WASHINGTON'S PERSONAL BOOKPLATE DESIGN AS WELL.
THE BACK BEARS AND ENGRAVED 7-LINE INSCRIPTION, "LAND REGISTRY / PRESENTED TO / COL F.P. WASHINGTON. / (LATE R.E.) / DIRECTOR OF SURVEYS / UPON HIS RETIREMENT. / 1898 - 1908"
    ENGLISH STERLING HALLMARKS BENEATH CARTOUCHE
    F. P. WASHINGTON
    IS MENTIONED IN
    THE UNITED SERVICE MAGAZINE,
1868, AS HAVING HAD A TEMPORARY COMMISSION IN THE CORPS OF ROYAL ENGINEERS AS A LIEUTENANT, HAVING BEEN MADE PERMANENT IN 1865.
    IN
    THE HANDBOOK OF JAMAICA
    , 1893,
    F.P. WASHINGTON
IS AGAIN MENTIONED AS A LIEUTENANT OF ENGINEERS BEING STATIONED ON THE ISLAND OF SAINT HELENA, AND LATER AGAIN IN THE SAME PUBLICATION LATER DATE, AS MAJOR F.P. WASHINGTON, ROYAL ENGINEERS, WEST INDIA REGIMENT, C.B.E.'s QUARTERS. UP-PARK CAMP.
WHETHER COL. F.P. WASHINGTON WAS A NOT TOO DISTANT BRITISH RELATION TO GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON (OF WHICH THERE WERE QUITE A FEW), OR A MORE DISTANT COUSIN, THIS REMAINS UNKNOWN, BUT THERE MUST HAVE BEEN SOME AFFINITY FOR USE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON'S ARMS AND MOTTO ON THIS TRAY, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THE BRITISH AVERSION TO THE MISAPPROPRIATED USE OF ARMORIAL BEARINGS...IT SIMPLY JUST ISN'T DONE.
