    Description

Today we are delighted to offer for sale a rare antique Gorham sterling silver centerpiece tray or platter!
Gorham Silver was founded in Providence, Rhode Island, 1831 by Jabez Gorham, a master craftsman, in partnership with Henry L. Webster. The firm's chief product was spoons of coin silver. The company also made thimbles, combs, jewelry, and other small items. During the heyday of American silver manufacturing, approximately 1850–1940, Gorham was highly influential. The company has produced matching hollowware in both sterling and silverplate.
This large and stately presentation tray is crafted after the original from Dublin, circa 1720. The original, an Irish treasure from the early 18th century, was used by a rich aristocratic family to display their wealth and dazzle their guests in a time when silver was just as valued as gold (the hall of mirrors at Versailles at one point had solid silver furniture). This substantial and hefty centerpiece bowl is beautifully crafted and detailed of gleaming solid and pure .925 sterling silver. It features a continuous scalloped edge to intensify the reflection of light and enhance the appeal of whatever is placed within the bowl. The center is beautifully engraved with a prominent and an ornate baroque blank coat of arms (no monogram - lucky you!). Marking on the bottom indicates this was produced in 1948. The piece is marked on the bottom with "Gorham Sterling 40613/2". This is a very heavy, substantial sterling piece with crisp detailing that will make a prominent, elegant centerpiece or serving dish for any festivity.
Tray presents well and is good vintage condition, with wear/scuffing, tarnishing, and patina commensurate with age and use. Light scratching is present: this bowl was used, but a jeweler could polish it out without sacrificing detail. There are a few minute tarnish spots that will polish out with some elbow grease (I have untouched). Add noble elegance and style to any fine silver collection with this classic piece from Gorham... Fresh to the market!
