    Description

This large, stately Irish Setter is not marked but has all the earmarks of a Mortens Studio dog figurine. It is larger than most and in the scale of the Morten creations, heavier than most which is true of Morten figurines that have a metal framework, and the surface paint is flaking which is often found on Mortens items. Mortens pieces tended to have applied labels and perhaps the labels were removed or fell off of this piece.
I could not find an image of a Mortens Irish Setter to compare. My conclusion was that the Irish Setter was now scarce and hard to find. If anyone has more information or knows that this is or isn't a Mortens, I'd very much appreciate your help.
This Setter is 6 3/4 inches high and 9 3/4 inches long from tip of tail to tip of nose. He has many small areas with flaked paint. While the photos show these, some of the white areas in the photos are just light reflections on the shiny finish.
Oscar Mortens studied art in Europe and emigrated from Sweden to Chicago where he opened a studio in 1931. He created many sculptures and then focused on figurines using a special process to create fine pieces. The figures have a metal and wire frame which is then covered with a plaster/ceramic medium before being painted and glazed. This makes Mortens figures durable and heavy for their size. The top finish proved to be delicate and prone to crazing, chipping and flaking. The studio operated until 1950.
