Advisory board okays sugar export to Tajikistan

ISLAMABAD: The Sugar Advi­sory Board (SAB) on Tuesday approved the export of 40,000 tonnes of sugar to Tajikistan.
The Trade Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) will make arrangements for this shipment after appr­oval from the Economic Coordination Commi­ttee (ECC) of the Cabinet.
The meeting, chaired by Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, informed the participants that the country had 2.852 million tonnes of sugar stocks, more than sufficient to meet local demand.
The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) representatives informed the meeting that 1.5 million tonnes of surplus sugar were available, which should be exported to support the industry and earn revenue to meet growers’ financial obligations.
The minister directed provincial cane commissioners and the Federal Board of Revenue to carry out stock reconciliation and present the report at the next board meeting.
The PSMA representatives stated that there had been no increase in the ex-mills price of sugar and it had nothing to do with the retail price of the commodity. They urged the government to take steps to maintain the retail price through the district administration.
